STUDY WITH A PERMIT

Study permit: most foreign students are allowed to study in Canada with this document. You do not have Canadian nationality and you wish to study more than 6 months in a Canadian institution? So, you will have to take the necessary steps to obtain this popular study permit.

 

What is a study permit?

 

This document is issued by an officer of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC, formerly known as CIC). In addition to your identity information, it especially mentions the duration for which the study permit is granted.

 

Before applying for a study permit, you will need a letter of admission from the host institution. This must imperatively be recognized by the IRCC services. An accreditation necessary to be eligible for a study permit. Therefore, remember to check that the establishment of your choice has this official accreditation. 

 

Coming to study in Canada with your family 

As part of a study permit application, you can include your family members: husband / wife, spouse, child (ren). Family members can obtain a potential work permit themselves or join the Canadian school system.

STUDYING IN WITHOUT A PERMIT

Only under certain conditions, foreign students do not need a study permit to study in Canada. There are mainly 4 exceptions. 

 

Student present 6 months or less 

If your training program lasts 6 months or less, the permit is not required. However, if you intend to work on campus or continue your studies with another program afterwards, it is preferable to apply for a study permit before coming to Canada.

 

Minor children 

Minor children residing in Canada do not need a study permit to attend kindergarten, elementary or secondary school. Whether parents are temporary workers, Canadian citizens or permanent residents, children have the same rights.

Please note that visitors’ children are not allowed to study in Canada. 

Families of diplomats and staff of diplomats 

Ambassadors and staff of diplomats do not need to apply for study permits for their families. Who is concerned? Spouse / Spouse, Spouse, Child, Child of the Spouse / Child, Child of a Child. 

Families of the armed forces 

The Foreign Forces in Canada Act lists the countries that benefit from this exception. The families of members of the armed forces of these countries officially present in Canada do not require a study permit.

EXTEND YOUR STAY AFTER
THE DIPLOMA

This is certainly one of the biggest advantages: foreign students who have obtained their Canadian diploma then have access to a post-diploma work permit.

 

This work permit is valid for a maximum of three years. 

Used to integrate into the Canadian workplace, it is often the first step towards applying for permanent resident status.
